How to deliver the best speech of your life

Recently, I saw a speech that touched my heart.

It was this speech by Jim Carrey: Jim Carrey Speech

The obvious question struck me

How does a person like Jim Carrey, who was diagnosed with ADHD, remember and flawlessly deliver an impactful speech?

The answer is much simpler than you think.

The Wrong Approach

Most people try to

→ Remember the speech word for word.

→ They start with a quote from some age old philosopher.

→ They try to preach and teach their audience life lessons.

→ They start their speech with a "Good morning" and end with an "I conclude".

This will only result in one of two things.

You either forget half your lines in the heat of the moment, or your audience claps because you left the stage.

Here is a better way

→ Start by asking yourself the question, 'What emotion do I want my audience to feel?'

→ Then reflect on when in your life you have felt that emotion.

→ Then ask yourself if you are the only one who has had such an experience, or if others might have been in a similar position. This is to see how relatable your speech is.

→ Instead of using fancy celebrity or philosopher quotes, think of quotes people told you in your life.

→ Lastly, remember the basic structure and flow of your speech. Don't obsess over exact wording, rather, focus on the message and the emotion.

Now all you have to do to practice your speech is take your phone, turn on the camera and record, observe where you are getting stuck, reflect, and redo.

This way, when you walk on stage, you aren't thinking about the speech, you know that you have one message that you want to share.

Good Luck
